Dimensional lumber is bolted together to make Ts and Ls that, in turn, are bolted to the ceiling joists. Heavy-duty storage totes are then slid in and suspended by their molded-in rims. Looks like there's still plenty of room to park cars underneath.

Randy Sarafan writes:

This Simple Bot was inspired by a work by artist James Rouvelle called Colony in which a bunch odd shaped ovals self-propel around their environment. It is my understanding that his bots were made by placing a vibrating motor freely inside of a Styrofoam ball that was then coated to give it an irregular shape. This dynamic makes his orbs fluctuate between wobbling in place and jerkily moving around the room. While this is a cool interaction, I was more interested in making something that had a more regular motion and was able to roll steadily about. Towards this end I have created Rolly Bot. To simply explain, Rolly is basically an over-sized tennis ball with an over-sized bristlebot placed inside. This allows Rolly to be rolled in whatever direction the bristlebot inside so chooses to drive.

We've been making allusions for a while now to a new area of the MAKE website, "to be launched soon." Monday is blast-off! So, what are we launching? It's our new! improved! (now with more WIN!) answer to the Make: Projects area. The new Make: Projects platform will be a place where we, Maker Media, can post our step-by-step projects, and a place where you, the maker community, can too (and we can all add to and improve each other's content). We teamed up with the fine folks at iFixIt to create it and we're really excited about what we came up with. We hope you will be, too. It's custom-rolled, wiki-based -- a collection of living documents -- so we can't wait to see what grows out of it.

Stay tuned for more details on Monday.
