postheadericon Apple’s Phil Schiller confirms: white iPhone to be available ‘this spring’

Whoa, Nelly. Ready for another round? The elusive white iPhone — spotted only in the hands of Woz and occasionally in those of our own Richard Lai — may ship after all. After hearing from Apple that it was being delayed twice in 2010, we’ve heard an extended radio silence ever since. Sure, we’ve seen hints here and there from third parties that this here unicorn was still making its way through the production line, but there’s nothing quite like a direct tweet from Cupertino’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing to really rekindle some interest. In response to a question on how to obtain a white iPhone, Philip Schiller fired back: “The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!).” That’s about as clear-cut as it gets for now, but we’ve still got a few inquiries we’d love answered. Is he talking about the iPhone 4, or the next one in the pipeline? And does he have any intention of building us up, only to let us down (let us down) once more? We shall see, won’t we?

[Thanks, Stefan]

postheadericon 64GB iPhone 4 prototype spotted in China? (Updated)

If 32GB just isn’t enough to carry your entire collection of Police bootlegs and Greatest Hits compilations, prepare to look enviously upon this bastion of storage salvation. It’s a 64GB iPhone 4, a supposed prototype leaked by a Foxconn employee. M.I.C. Gadget scored a quick video of the phone, even prying off the back cover revealing internals that certainly look official. The back is curiously designated “XXGB,” which thankfully does not indicate a turn to Roman Numerals, while the model number and FCC ID are similarly X’d out. Other details, like a missing silver ring around the camera lens, indeed make this look like a prototype, but of course the question now is whether this plucky little handset will ever follow its dreams of becoming a production model before getting relegated to obsolescence.

Update: We went over to the Sin Tak shopping mall in Hong Kong to get up close and personal with this mysterious device. Shockingly, the folks wanted a hefty HK$13,500 (US$1,734) for their phone, but this alone doesn’t really prove whether it’s a legit Foxconn prototype. We also got some folks to run the numbers through Apple’s system, and while the serial number is invalid, the model number indicates that this device was manufactured in early 2010, which probably means at one point Apple intended to release a 64GB version of the iPhone 4, but then changed its mind. Ah well, let’s see what this summer will bring us.

postheadericon Pay-as-you-go shocker! CDMA iPhone 4 makes its way to Cricket Wireless (via jailbreak)

As any astute follower of the “pay-as-you-go” world knows, there are quite a few back alley Cricket dealers (and quite a few main street ones as well) that will happily flash any phone you give them for use on their network — and not even Verizon’s CDMA iPhone is immune. Ready to jump ship from “America’s largest?” Of course, you’ll have to jailbreak, install some third party MMS software, and trust some random dude at the Cricket store with your precious smartphone. We’re not saying it’s wise, but it is possible, as the video below attests. See for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Mark]

postheadericon AT&T Mobile Hotspot for iPhone 4 limited to just three WiFi devices (update: it’s an iOS 4.3 thing)

Say it ain’t so! According to this here slide, which details a bit of insidery AT&T information about the impending release of iOS 4.3, Ma Bell’s iPhone 4 will have its Personal Hotspot restricted to use with just three devices. Just about every MiFi / mobile hotspot device we’ve ever seen — including Verizon’s iPhone 4 — has supported five WiFi devices, but unless AT&T pulls a 180 here, it’ll be limiting its iPhone to just three connections. What’s wild is that we’ve found AT&T to actually have superior 3G speeds when you can actually get a signal (and thus, be more conducive to tethering five devices at once), and since you’d be on a data cap anyway, it’s not like AT&T risks losing millions from five P2P servers being ran over one’s iPhone. Granted, it’s possible that some unicorn crafted this piece of paperwork to throw us all off, but we’ve reached out to AT&T and are awaiting comment. You know, just in case.

Update: Based on Apple’s iOS 4.3 page, only three WiFi devices are supported through the Personal Hotspot connection. If you’d like to tether five total devices, the other two will need to be over Bluetooth / USB. Don’t go blaming AT&T here — we’re guessing Verizon’s model will be set up the same way. Thanks, Christian!
