postheadericon iPad 2 shipping estimates now three to four weeks, retail availability hit and miss

Already get your iPad 2? Then consider yourself lucky, as anyone trying to get one now will likely require quite a bit of patience. As you may have noticed, Apple’s shipping times for online orders have now slipped yet again from the previous two to three week estimate to a lengthy three to four weeks, although things may not be quite that straightforward. Some folks are reporting that they’re already receiving shipping notices even though their estimated delivery date was weeks away, so Apple might just be being overly cautious with its estimates. On the other hand, there’s also been some reports of Apple canceling orders for being “over the limit” — even from folks that have just ordered one iPad — although those seem to be few and far between at the moment.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the situation is even more confusing at retail stores (Apple or otherwise). There are numerous reports of stores being sold out completely, and yet more of stores that have only received certain models (something we’ve also seen first hand). What’s more, it seems that retail stores have largely been unable to give folks a clear indication as to when new stock will arrive, which prompted some folks to line up each morning just to see if a new shipment has come in (as pictured above). Of course, as far as problems go, this is probably one that Apple doesn’t mind having, although it does certainly seem like there’s some room for improvement before the inevitable iPad 3 launch.

Toilets, cows, and Germans have all been tagged by RFIDs, but according to a new study, it’s footwear and fashion that top the demand for radio-enabled tracking. In a report released yesterday, ABI Research said more than three-quarters of a billion RFID tags will be used in global apparel markets in 2011, with retailers like Walmart, Macy’s, and JC Penney leading the way. Item-level tracking isn’t new — in fact we saw something similar in 2006 — but with the likes of Walmart on board, the system is expected to grow as much as 60 percent in the next three years. The study suggests inventory and security as driving factors in the adoption of RFIDs, but we’ve got our suspicions. And anyway, we don’t want anyone to know how much we spent on that Material Girl leopard print shrug — not even a machine.

postheadericon Three iPad dummy SKUs appear at Best Buy website

There’s not much to see here, folks, just a few listings on Best Buy’s website for Apple iPads that don’t currently exist. They could be the result of a database error, an employee prank, or even just wishful thinking. Still, between well-placed sources informing us that a super-high-resolution, SD-card bearing, dual-mode iPad 2 is on the way and a feeling of déjà vu, we can’t help but think there might be a rather exciting prize behind doors number one, two and three. Or perhaps just a Verizon iPad. We’re sure that would make someone’s day.

postheadericon Apple will drop restocking fees on January 11th

9to5 Mac reports that Apple will drop its 10 percent restocking fees on January 11th. We’ve confirmed with our own sources that this is true. January 11th happens to be the day that Verizon will hold a mysterious event in New York City, presumably for the Verizon iPhone. While this certainly isn’t incontrovertible evidence that the Verizon event is actually more of an Apple event, this definitely adds some tinder to the flaming rumor mill. Then again, Apple could merely be following Best Buy’s lead, with the 1.11.11 date pure coincidence. Either way, we’re fans of open return policies for expensive products, so if you ask us, it’s more of a good thing.
